How to Choose a Licensed Electrician in the GTA: 7 Things to Check

How to Choose a Licensed Electrician in the GTA: 7 Things to Check

Hiring an electrician is not like hiring a painter. Electrical work involves live power, fire risk, and legal liability. A bad job can void your insurance, fail an inspection, or worse. Whether you need a panel upgrade, EV charger, or full rewiring, here are the 7 things every GTA homeowner and business owner should verify before hiring.

1. Verify their ESA licence number

In Ontario, all electrical work must be performed by a licensed electrical contractor registered with the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). Every licensed contractor has an ECRA/ESA licence number (e.g., #7011426). You can verify it on the ESA contractor lookup tool.

Red flag: If a contractor can’t provide a licence number or says “I don’t need one for small jobs” — walk away. All electrical work in Ontario requires a licensed contractor and an ESA permit.

2. Confirm they pull ESA permits

A legitimate contractor pulls an ESA permit for every job — panel upgrades, new circuits, EV chargers, rewiring, and even outlet additions in some cases. The permit ensures an ESA inspector verifies the work meets the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.

Ask: “Will you pull an ESA permit for this job?” If the answer is no, or “it’s not needed,” find another contractor. Unpermitted work voids your home insurance and creates liability if there’s a fire.

3. Check insurance and WSIB coverage

A licensed electrical contractor should carry:

  • General liability insurance (minimum $2M, ideally $5M for commercial)
  • WSIB (Workplace Safety and Insurance Board) coverage — protects you if a worker is injured on your property

Ask for a certificate of insurance. If they can’t provide one, you’re liable for any injuries or property damage.

4. Get a written, itemized quote

A professional quote should include:

  • Scope of work (what’s being done, where, and how)
  • Materials specified (panel brand, breaker count, wire gauge)
  • Labour cost
  • ESA permit and inspection (should be included, not extra)
  • Toronto Hydro coordination (if service size changes)
  • Timeline and payment terms
  • Warranty (labour and materials)

Red flag: Vague quotes like “panel upgrade — $3,000” with no breakdown. You should know exactly what you’re paying for before work starts.

5. Check reviews and references

Look beyond the contractor’s website:

  • Google Reviews — check for 4+ stars with 20+ reviews. Read the negative ones too.
  • HomeStars — GTA-specific contractor reviews
  • Better Business Bureau (BBB) — check for complaints
  • Ask for references — a good contractor will provide 2-3 recent clients you can call

North York Electrical (NYES) is rated on Google, HomeStars, and social media. Check our reviews before calling.

6. Ask about experience with your specific job

Not all electricians are equal. A residential panel specialist may not be the right choice for a commercial tenant fit-out. Ask:

  • How many similar jobs have you done in the last 12 months?
  • Do you have experience with [your specific need: EV chargers, 600V systems, generators, etc.]?
  • Can you handle Toronto Hydro coordination and ESA inspections?
  • Do you work on weekends/after hours if needed?

North York Electrical has 30+ years of experience across residential, commercial, industrial, and construction electrical — including 600V systems, machinery wiring, and EV charger installations.

7. Watch for these red flags

  • No licence number or “I don’t need one”
  • No written quote — “I’ll just give you a price on the spot”
  • Cash only / no receipt — no paper trail means no warranty and no insurance claim
  • Pressure to decide immediately — “This price is only good today”
  • No ESA permit — “It’s not needed for this job”
  • Unusually low price — if it’s 40% cheaper than everyone else, something is being cut (permits, insurance, quality)
  • No physical address or business registration

Why licensing matters more than price

The cheapest electrician in Toronto is rarely the best value. Here’s why:

  • Unlicensed work voids your insurance — if there’s a fire, your insurer can deny the claim
  • Failed inspections cost more — fixing non-compliant work costs more than doing it right the first time
  • Resale problems — home inspectors and buyers’ lawyers will flag unpermitted electrical work
  • Safety — electrical fires kill. Licensed contractors follow the Ontario Electrical Safety Code for a reason

What to expect from a good electrician

A professional electrical contractor should:

  • Return your call within 24 hours
  • Provide a free estimate (no charge for the quote)
  • Show up on time for the assessment
  • Explain the work in plain language
  • Pull all required permits
  • Provide the ESA Certificate of Inspection when done
  • Clean up after the job
  • Stand behind their work with a written warranty
